Space-age homes, now 60 years old
Satellite Beach's first houses went up quickly in the 1960s for engineers and technicians working at the Cape. Most were modest concrete-block ranches, and many have since been added onto, so it's common to find an original bathroom beside a 1990s addition with completely different plumbing. The junction where old and new lines meet, often inside a wall or under the slab, is where we find many leaks. Canals on the lagoon side
The lagoon side of Satellite Beach has residential canals where boats tie up behind houses. Those canals rise with the lagoon during storms and heavy rain, and low canal-front lots can flood. Seawalls, docks and low lanais see water first.
The ocean side
Oceanfront homes and condos face erosion, surge and wind-driven rain. Nicole's waves in 2022 eroded dunes along this stretch of Brevard.
