Ian and Shingle Creek
When Hurricane Ian stalled over Central Florida in September 2022, the rain had to go somewhere. Shingle Creek, which drains a large area of south Orlando into Lake Tohopekaliga, overflowed its banks, and neighborhoods along the creek in Kissimmee flooded. Some residents, including at a senior living community, had to be evacuated by boat. Many of the flooded homes were not in high-risk zones. For anyone living near Shingle Creek or other drainage channels, flood coverage deserves a serious look.
Lakes that rise and stay high
Lake Tohopekaliga, East Lake Toho, and the lakes south of them are part of a managed system that eventually drains to Lake Okeechobee. After major rain events, lake levels rise and can stay high for weeks while water is released gradually downstream. Lakefront properties and low neighborhoods can see water approach for days after the rain stops. Check your address in the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
Vacation homes by the thousands
The US 192 corridor and communities near the parks hold thousands of short-term rental homes, many with private pools and owners who live out of state. Charley's path
Hurricane Charley crossed directly over Kissimmee in August 2004, still a hurricane after its Southwest Florida landfall. It tore roofs off homes and mobile homes across Osceola County. Storms crossing the peninsula at strength are less common than coastal hits, but they happen, and roofs, windows and sliding doors are what let water in when they do.
